Can Online Networking Succeed Without Offline?
22 Apr 2010

A lot depends on what you want to achieve. Online networks in isolation can work very well to help you build your profile, particularly across a wide area, and to get feedback and answer questions.

If you want to develop strong relationships, particularly to generate referrals, online networking will only take you so far. I have developed some strong relationships online, but I always believe that there is a limit to the connection you can make with someone when you have never met in person.

There is something about seeing the whites of people's eyes that solidifies a relationship if you strike a rapport. That can't be replicated by online 'avatars'.

Wherever possible, make arrangements to meet your top online contacts in person and take the relationship to the next level.
