ISES Greener Times at The Hub
Date: From 23 Mar 2010
Time: From 6.30pm to 10:00pm

Environmental impact was the hot topic at this month's ISES UK event, inspiringly delivered by our industry experts each with a different focus in their knowledge in creating sustainable events.  Taking to the stage for ISES: Greener Times at The Hub, Kings Cross, were Eleanor Whitley from the venue and Jamie Grainger-Smith from catering partner Think Eat Drink who provided a background to the venue as a member's centre to utilise state of the art exhibition and meeting spaces, lectures and master-classes, and live music.  The Hub is a beautiful listed building a minute from the station and with a slick, eco aware, designer interior containing furniture and fittings 'with a story', for example the conference chairs recycled from old Playstations.

We were delighted to welcome our headlining speaker Aileen Reuter, marketing director for Grass Roots, who drew fascinating case studies from their Toyota event.   Already a large scale and high profile logistical challenge, Aileen gave us great insight into the environmental impact in moving 500 delegates around the Capital, how to keep it to a minimum and off-set the effects where possible.

1 Following the presentation, guests returned upstairs to continue networking against the blissful sounds of singer Hayley Tucker and were
treated to delicious organic and exquisitely presented catering from TED (Think, Eat, Drink).  Again, TED were fully committed to reducing the environmental impact of our event and we will find out later our AV, and  lighting sponsor Paul Edwards of Oxygen Event Services will be demonstrating how to run an environmental impact assessment with ISES: Greener Times as the case study.
Organic wine was generously provided by Stellar Winery and Aubert & Mascoli with a cash bar open downstairs in the café to encourage guests to sample a whole host of fair trade beverages and snacks.  Finally, we would like to thank Thorns for providing furniture for the presentation, Off To Work for staffing our cloakroom, and ISES newcomers BIG for providing us with recyclable badges for our guests.

Prior to joining Grass Roots she spent 10 years in marketing within the automotive and petroleum sectors, including running her own marketing services company.

Corporate Responsibility is a moral and business imperative, yet some still believe it difficult to apply when creating large events.  Grass Roots will demonstrate through a case study how CSR (Corporate and Social Responsibility) can be delivered effectively without costing a fortune or the earth.  Hopefully the practical approach shared will inspire you to weave corporately responsible behaviours into the planning and delivery of your events...read more

Eleanor Whitley is part of the founding team at Hub Kings Cross and has helped build a thriving community of over 300 individuals working in socially minded business.

In line with the Hub’s ethos, Eleanor’s ambition is to attract, inspire and support a global community of diverse individuals working together to create a radically better world. Hub Kings Cross has developed a physical and virtual global ecosystem to fuel the sustainable economy.  It all started with the basics- desks, chairs, connectivity, printers, meeting rooms, event spaces, a fair trade café bar- all housed in a sustainably run building. Then came the bit that’s harder to control- building a thriving community of freethinkers and doers with the focus to solve some of the world’s most intractable problems...read more
